Landscape is the thread between two exhibitions at The Scottish Gallery during the festival.

Memories of a Thousand Years is a collection of beautifully considered Japanese boxes by Koji Hatakeyama who describes bronze as being “material with memories of a thousand years”. The patinated surfaces of the boxes, with gold or silver interiors, represent an imagined landscape, evoking a sense of time. His boxes are what the west would consider to be scholarly items, precious objects held in high esteem in the household.

The landscape of Devon – its forms, patterns and colours – are the inspiration for renowned glass artist Bob Crooks. Alchemy is a collection of new work which seems to amplify his use of colour as he presents work on a grand and a tiny scale including still life groups.
