Welcome into Designer Paul Smith’s World

Discover a world of fashion, creation, inspiration and collaboration in Hello My Name is Paul Smith at The Lighthouse, Scotland’s Centre for Design and Architecture.

Debuted at the Design Museum in London in 2013/14, the exhibition draws on Paul’s personal archive, from the company’s beginnings in Nottingham to its international prominence today.

It explores how the designer’s unique creative intuition, together with an understanding of the roles of designer and retailer, have laid the foundations for the company’s lasting success and offer a unique insight into the mind of designer Paul Smith.

The exhibition begins with a recreation of his first shop – a compact three-metre-by-three-metre space that he opened in Nottingham in 1970. The display also features a makeshift version of the designer’s office, known for being a myriad of curiosities, full of objects collected from his many travels, as well as artwork, bikes and books. As well as a look at his many unique shop designs from around the world there is a recreation of his design studio and a collection of his greatest collaborations.

One of the collaborations is the Carnival rug with the Rug Company.  He says “Stripes are synonymous with me as a designer but I wanted to push myself to look at stripes and colour in a different way. I like opposites – positive and negative, transparency and density, reverse imagery and the overlaying of colours, some washed out some vibrant.”
